common toad

The common toad (Bufo bufo) is a species of toad found throughout Europe (especially in the UK). It is also known as the European toad. It is a tailless amphibian that can change its colour to suit its surroundings. It is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN.

The common toad has a dry warty skin with a rough appearance. Its skin is coated with a toxic poison. If ever a predator consumes a common toad, its mouth will burn due to the poison on the toad's skin. Whenever a common toad is threatened it inflates its body to show itself bigger to its threat. Inorder to escape, it loses its moisture to make its body lighter.

Common toads are one of the largest amphibians in the UK. Female common toads are larger in size when compared to male common toads. Female common toads can grow upto 130 mm in length while male ones can grow only upto 80 mm in length.

A Common toad is usually brown in colour. Its skin colour changes with the colour of the soil of its habitat. The toad blends its colour with its surroundings. This makes it hard for a predator to locate it.
